Altera recently announced that Silver Lake Capital Partners has completed its acquisition of a 51% stake in the company, previously held by Intel. Intel will retain a 49% stake in Altera. The completion of this transaction marks Altera's emergence as the world's largest independent, dedicated FPGA solutions provider.

Altera, a global leader in FPGA innovation, recently announced that Silver Lake Capital Partners, a global technology investment giant, has completed its acquisition of a 51% stake in Altera, previously held by Intel. Intel will retain a 49% stake in Altera, demonstrating both parties' confidence in Altera's future success.

The completion of this transaction marks Altera's emergence as the world's largest independent, dedicated FPGA solutions provider. By providing the software tools, development kits, IP, and design services needed to build complete FPGA solutions, Altera will help customers and partners accelerate innovation.

Altera stated that it is committed to providing customers and developers with a full-stack FPGA portfolio featuring industry-leading architecture, efficient performance, and easy-to-use, scalable software. With the Agilex™ product family, Altera's advanced FPGA solutions make AI more accessible by lowering the cost of entry while improving performance, reliability, and security. Furthermore, Altera's partnerships with leading process nodes and foundry partners ensure a flexible and resilient supply chain, providing global customers with peace of mind for product development.

A brief review of Altera's journey to independence:

In early 2024, Intel announced the spinoff of its Programmable Solutions Group into an independent FPGA company, resurrecting the Altera name. The company will deliver programmable solutions in a bold, flexible, and customer-centric manner, offering programmable solutions and easy-to-use AI products in sectors such as communications, cloud computing, data centers, embedded systems, industrial, automotive, and military aerospace.

On January 10, 2025, Altera officially announced its separation from Intel and raised its corporate flag, symbolizing its independence. Altera officially became an independently operated FPGA company while retaining its strategic partnership with Intel. On Altera's social media platform, the company stated, "Today marks a proud milestone as we officially raise the Altera flag as an independent FPGA company. We are excited to drive future innovation with flexibility and focus, shaping the next era of FPGA technology."

On April 14, Intel announced the sale of a 51% stake in its programmable chip business, Altera, to private equity firm Silver Lake Partners at a valuation of $8.75 billion. Intel will retain the remaining 49% stake following the transaction. This transaction is part of Intel's strategic realignment to divest non-core assets, optimize its cost structure, and focus on its core business areas.

Altera CEO Raghib Hussain stated that he was delighted to be working with Silver Lake Partners. This far-reaching strategic investment will not only accelerate the company's pace of innovation but also further strengthen Altera's leadership in the FPGA market at a critical time when AI applications continue to drive demand for programmable logic. Going forward, Altera will focus on optimizing its product portfolio, fully unleashing the organization's innovation potential and talent advantages, continuously meeting customers' evolving needs, and seizing the significant opportunities presented by AI. Kenneth Hao, Chairman and Managing Partner of Silver Lake Capital, noted in his speech that Altera holds an irreplaceable strategic position at the forefront of the FPGA industry and AI evolution. "Our investment not only demonstrates our unwavering confidence in its technological leadership, customer commitment, and long-term growth potential, but also represents our strong support for its future development." Silver Lake Capital will help Altera accelerate its expansion into key areas such as industrial automation, audio and video, robotics, data centers, telecommunications, and edge AI.
